DUTCH TESTING

At Barberry Health & Spine, we take a whole-body, functional approach to your health. That means looking deeper — beyond symptoms — to uncover the root causes of imbalance. One of the most powerful tools we use in this process is DUTCH hormone testing.

What is DUTCH Testing?
The DUTCH Test (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) is a cutting-edge, lab test that gives a detailed, accurate picture of your hormone levels and how your body processes them. It’s a powerful resource for anyone who is navigating hormone-related symptoms at any stage of life — whether it’s fatigue, anxiety, irregular cycles, fertility struggles, perimenopause, or postpartum recovery.

Unlike traditional blood tests that provide just a snapshot, DUTCH testing shows hormone patterns over time — including how they are metabolized and how your adrenal function is supporting (or stressing) your body.

Depending on the type of test, the panels can include:
  • Sex Hormones: estrogens, progesterone, and testosterone production & metabolic patterns
  • Adrenal Hormones: DHEA & cortisol (stress hormone) production & metabolic patterns
  • Diurnal free cortisol and cortisone patterns
  • Melatonin production through the night
  • Micronutrient availability and oxidative stress (targeted organic acids panel)

Types of DUTCH Tests Offered:
We’ll help you choose the right test based on your goals and symptoms at the complimentary consult visit. This list does not include all tests offered.

1. DUTCH Complete:
  • The most popular test — evaluating sex and adrenal hormone production and metabolism. Includes organic acid testing (OATs) to address possible nutritional deficiencies, oxidative stress, gut dysbiosis, melatonin levels, and neuroinflammation. This test also accesses cortisol (stress hormone) rhythms.
  • Recommended for females experiencing fatigue or low energy, PMS, vaginal dryness, brain fog, low libido, weight gain, fertility concerns, or hot flashes/night sweats.
  • Recommended for males experiencing erectile dysfunction or low libido, decreased muscle mass, abdominal weight gain, fatigue or low energy, or brain fog.
  • This test combines the DUTCH Sex Hormones, Adrenal, and OATs Panels.

2. DUTCH Sex Hormones:
  • This panel only includes sex hormones for baseline measurements. A method for more accurate vaginal hormone and oral progesterone monitoring.
  • Ultimate test for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) monitoring.

3. DUTCH Adrenal:
  • Provides free cortisol patterns that parallel saliva with the addition of metabolite measurements.
  • An improved marker for total cortisol production.

4. DUTCH CAR:
  • Salivary cortisol awakening response (CAR) is the immediate rise in cortisol levels upon waking and relates to stress, sleep, and energy levels.

5. DUTCH Organic Acids (OATS):
  • These organic acids are the metabolites of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin.
  • People with an imbalance in these neurotransmitters may experience symoptoms that are also common with an imbalance in hormones.

6. DUTCH Plus:
  • EVERYTHING in the DUTCH Complete, plus salivary cortisol awakening response (CAR) to evaluate stress response in more detail — ideal for those with burnout, fatigue, or mood swings.
  • Includes a more complete picture of HPA axis function if HPA axis dysfunction is suspected.
  • Recommended for anyone experiencing fatigue (especially on waking), insomnia, chronic fatigue, depression and/or anxiety (especially on waking), high-stress lifestyle, or loss of resiliency.
  • This test combines the DUTCH Complete + DUTCH CAR.

7. DUTCH Cycle Mapping:
  • Tracks estrogen and progesterone across your entire menstrual cycle. This is great for females with:
    • Symptomatic hormone shifts during their cycle
    • Who have fertility concerns
    • Who have menstrual cycle symptoms and who still have one or both ovaries and no uterus (partial hysterectomy)
    • Who have had an endometrial ablation and don't cycle
    • Perimenopausal females before hormone replacement therapy.
  • Recommended for females experiencing: irregular cycles, PCOS, luteal phase defect, trying to conceive (TTC), month-long hormonal symptoms, partial hysterectomy, ablations, Mirena IUD, mood swings that follow a cycle, PMS, mid-cycle spotting, and migraines.

8. DUTCH Cycle Mapping + Complete:
  • The most in-depth option — combining daily hormone mapping with a full DUTCH Complete for women needing a comprehensive fertility or hormone picture.
  • Includes information about:
    • Ovarian reserve
    • Follicle development
    • Ovulation
    • Luteal sufficiency
  • This is great for those looking for:
    • Estrogen dominance
    • Androgen dominance
    • Preconception wellness
  • Recommended for females experiencing: irregular cycles, PCOS, luteal phase defect , TTC, month-long hormonal symptoms, partial hysterectomy, ablations, Mirena IUD, mood swings that follow a cycle, PMS, mid-cycle spotting, migraines, fatigue or low energy, hot flashes/night sweats, vaginal dryness, brain fog, low libido, weight gain, and fertility concerns.
This test combines the DUTCH complete and DUTCH Cycle Mapping.
